Michigan Hopeful Online Poker Will Be Up By “Late Fall”

Michigan has recently given poker players reason for rejoice!

While legislation was passed and signed into law in 2019 to legalize online gaming, the ongoing pandemic and loss of revenue for the state has necessitated a push for online gaming to happen sooner than previously expected.

In June, legislation was introduced into Michigan’s State Senate by lawmakers wanting to legalize online poker playing. The bill will “give the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) the authority to enter into agreements to allow online poker operators to share their player pools in other states with those in Michigan.”

Pennsylvania has seen great success in the launch of online poker playing, and Michigan is looking to repeat that feat.

The bill, known as SB991, would only allow multijurisdictional access to igaming for poker. Therefore, the MGCB will be restricted to only entering into pacts within the US;meaning there will be no access to international online poker rooms.

What will Online Poker in Michigan Look Like?

The MGCB is currently processing applications for providers of online casinos, but so far two sites appear to be ready to be up and going before the end of 2020. Those sites are:

  • PokerStars MI
  • partypoker MI

The only other supplier on the list of Supplier License Applications who offers an online poker platform is Pala Interactive Inc, which is currently only active in New Jersey.

When Can We Expect the Launch?

There is no timeline for when the bill will be passed, or when online poker will go live. Lawmakers and the MGCB are hopeful the launch will take place by “late fall.” Once the full legislation is passed by the State Senate, it will then go to the State House to be voted on, and will need to be signed into law by current Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

Once these steps are taken, Michigan will be open for business to online poker players where they will be able to play safely at home (on their phones, computers, and tablets) against other players around the state.
